Hospital Wayfinding Signage

Hospital wayfinding signs by Medash

The importance of wayfinding within a hospital setting:

There’s no getting around the fact that hospitals, for a large percentage of their visitors, are scary places which are only visited at stressful times. Under such conditions it can be hard to focus on signage options and, combined with the labyrinthian layout of many medical complexes, means that it is easy for them to get lost. This can increase stress levels for any visitors and put pressure on staff members who then have to stop what they are doing to point out the way.

It is for this reason that you want to make sure that your hospital wayfinding signage (sometimes also known as directional signage) is as easy to read as possible, preferably being understandable with a single glance.

High-definition imagery and text, good colour combinations and the use of readily recognisable symbols all aid in this. Medash makes use of cutting-edge technology and machinery to ensure all of our signs also retain the highest visual fidelity – high contrast, bold, bright colours, and crystal-clear text, no matter when they were installed.

Our ability to take in and process information is hugely affected when we are in pain, stressed or nervous. Still, there are a few things that you can do to make your signage easy to understand: consistent typefaces and colours, large enough text, readily recognisable symbols where appropriate, and placing signs in areas where the eyes naturally fall and people naturally stop to decide on the next direction to take. A site visit by Medash can help decide on all of this, as well as advise you on the best course of action.

A Variety of Hospital Wayfinding Signage Options:

Not everyone who visits a hospital will be a patient, so there needs to be ample signage to point out the directions to different sectors of the hospital, both front and back-of-house. As well as signs that literally point the way, it is also a good idea to clearly signpost destination areas with identification signs, such as wards, waiting rooms, and reception areas.

This will give the best possible chance of anyone new to the building being able to navigate their way around it, which in turn will help with the smooth movement of people within the hospital itself, and keep them from having to stop to ask reception or staff members for directions.

Types of hospital wayfinding signs:

      • Room identification signs
      • Ward, bay and department signs
      • Floor arrow and directional signs for most used routes
      • Floor plans
      • Reception and waiting room signage
      • External wayfinding signage, such as for car park and exit.

The variety of wayfinding signs needed will depend on the hospital or campus in question. This is why Medash treats each project on a bespoke basis, creating signs that suit the unique needs of each location.

Hospital wayfinding signage that works hard & looks good

Hardwearing wayfinding signs:

Hospitals get thousands of visitors a day, so any signage needs to be ready to handle a high degree of wear and tear, especially if it comes into contact with people, such as floor signage or human-level wall signs in high-traffic areas.

Plus, it will come under more intensive cleaning than signage found in other buildings, so will need to withstand exposure to moisture and chemicals on a regular basis.

Hardwearing signage is about more than wear and tear, however. It needs to remain legible and its state to remain intact, whether it was recently cleaned or installed a while ago.

As well as the physical toll the signage can take, there is the visual side to consider too: well-made hospital signage can contribute to the overall professionalism and credibility of the hospital. It can help create a positive first impression and instil confidence in patients and visitors that they are in good hands.

Medash uses the latest technology and their ample sign-making expertise to ensure that every signage option is made out of exactly the right materials to suit its particular location and job and has all of the necessary design features to keep it performing perfectly throughout the time that it is in place.

Wayfinding signs that are easy to install & easy to update

Hospitals are ever-changing places, with new rules and regulations, changes of locations, times and assets,  and as such signage will need to be kept up to date and replaced regularly and quickly.

Our highly trained staff will not only design and install the highest quality hospital wayfinding signage, but they can also create and install supplementary and replacement signage quickly as well as ensure they perfectly match the previous and surrounding signage.
